what is haematite?
Iron Ore

Haematite (or Hematite) is the mineral form of iron oxide. Due to the red colour of the powdered mineral, Haematite derived its name from the Greek word haimatites meaning blood.

Haematite is found in various states of compactness, from a soft red paint ore, which was used by early American Indians to adorn their faces before battle.

This mineral continues to be used today as a pigment combined with resin, to the most compact form of the mineral which can then be cut or moulded for jewellery. This compact pigment form of haematite is also known as haematine.
